Composting is the decomposition of plant remains and other once-living materials to make an earthy, dark, crumbly substance that is excellent for adding to houseplants or enriching garden soil. It is the way to recycle your yard and kitchen wastes, and is a critical step in reducing the volume of garbage needlessly sent to landfills for disposal. It's easy to learn how to compost. Have you read about a farmer in Rhode
Island who has grown a 1,502
pound pumpkin, which looks like it will break
the Guinness World record for that category. The
current record is held by a Pennsylvania man who
produced a 1,469 pound pumpkin. How do they get
so big? Well part of it is the seeds, combined with
the care the gardeners provides, and last but not
least is the nutrients the plant receives. To get
that large the growers often resort to a cocktail
of different fertilizer mixtures given to the plant
at key points in the plants life. But did you know
you can get a pumpkin to grow to about 500 pounds
without chemical fertilizers?
The Composting
Council of Canada has offered a contest for
the past 5 years to fellow Compost! Family members
who can grow the biggest pumpkin without chemical
fertilizers or supplements. Don’t believe
they can reach 500 pounds without all that jungle
juice? Would you believe 600 pounds! Read
